The Catalyst Home Services Story

Catalyst Home Services didn’t start with a grand vision or a business school plan. It started with a straightforward observation: London had no shortage of plumbers, but finding one you could genuinely rely on — who showed up when promised, charged what they quoted, and left the job finished — was harder than it should be. We decided to be that company instead.

We’re a family-run plumbing and property maintenance business covering the whole of London. Every job we take on reflects the same values we started with — qualified engineers, honest pricing, and work that’s done properly the first time.

WHERE IT BEGAN

London is one of the most demanding cities in the world to run a trades business. The property stock alone is extraordinary in its variety — Victorian terraces with original lead pipework, purpose-built blocks from the 1960s with ageing gravity systems, modern new builds with pressurised unvented cylinders, and commercial premises with infrastructure that hasn’t been properly documented in years.

Homeowners in this city deal with all of it. And for a long time, they dealt with it while navigating a trades market full of inconsistency — contractors who were skilled but unreliable, or reliable but not skilled enough for the job at hand, or neither.

The founding team at Catalyst had years of hands-on experience in London properties before the company existed. They’d seen the inside of enough boiler cupboards and airing cupboards to know what good work looked like, and what corners looked like when they’d been cut. When Catalyst was formed, the intention was specific: build a company that treats every job — a dripping tap in a Hackney flat or a full commercial fit-out in the City — with the same standard of care.

WHAT WE SET OUT TO DO DIFFERENTLY

Three things drove the way Catalyst was built from the start.

First: no subcontracting. In a city with high demand and variable supply of qualified tradespeople, it’s common for plumbing companies to pass jobs to subcontractors when capacity gets tight. It’s understandable commercially, but it means the company taking your money is not the company doing your job. At Catalyst, every engineer is directly employed by us — vetted, trained, and accountable.

Second: straight pricing. The practice of quoting low to win the job and recovering margin through extras is so widespread it has its own name in the trades. We don’t do it. Before any planned work begins, you get a written quote. For callouts where the scope isn’t clear until the engineer arrives, we explain what we’ve found and what it’ll cost before we touch anything.

Third: proper qualifications for the job, not general competence. Different types of plumbing work require different qualifications. Unvented hot water systems require G3 certification. Notifiable work under Building Regulations requires documented completion. Water fittings work must comply with the 1999 Water Regulations. None of this is optional — it exists to protect homeowners, tenants, and insurers. We ensure the right engineer with the right qualifications attends the right job, every time.

These three things don’t sound revolutionary. They’re just what good service looks like. But holding to them consistently, across dozens of jobs a week, across a city this size, is actually where most companies fall short. That’s been our focus since day one.

GROWING ACROSS LONDON

Growth in the trades business happens word of mouth first, reputation second, and marketing third. We’re in all three phases now — but the foundation has always been the first two.

Our earliest customers came from personal recommendations. Someone’s neighbour had used us. A letting agent had seen how we handled a tricky callout and started referring their landlord clients. A developer on a small project in South London asked us back for the next one.

Over time, we expanded the range of services we cover — from core plumbing repairs into drainage, installations, specialist services, and eventually into Annual Maintenance Contracts for both residential and commercial clients who wanted something more structured than reactive repairs.

We now cover every London borough. You can see the full list on our Service Areas page. The team has grown too — you can meet them on the Our Team page.

THE RANGE OF WORK WE DO TODAY

The “Catalyst” in our name refers to something that makes other things happen. For homeowners, that often means getting a problem fixed so life can get back to normal. For landlords and property managers, it means maintaining assets and meeting compliance obligations. For developers and commercial clients, it means getting the plumbing done on programme so the wider project can move forward.

Here’s what we cover:

Repairs

Most plumbing calls are repairs — something has broken, leaked, blocked, or stopped working. Our repair team deals with leaks, burst pipes, tap failures, toilet faults, and water pressure problems. We carry common parts on the van so most jobs finish on the first visit.

Drainage

Blocked or damaged drains don’t get better on their own. We handle drain clearance, blocked toilet unblocking, CCTV drain surveys, and sewer line repair — using proper equipment rather than improvising.

Installations

Planned projects need proper preparation. We carry out water heater installations, full bathroom fits, new build plumbing, and pipe replacement and relining — all to current Building Regulations standards with completion documentation.

Specialist Services

Some jobs require specific qualifications or experience. We handle commercial plumbing, boiler and water heater servicing, 24/7 emergency callouts, and complex residential plumbing.

Annual Maintenance Contracts

For clients who want a structured maintenance plan rather than ad-hoc repairs, our AMC options cover residential properties, commercial premises, and planned preventive maintenance programmes. See our AMC Pricing & Packages page for details.

WHAT QUALIFICATIONS MEAN IN PRACTICE

We mention qualifications a lot because they genuinely matter in ways that aren’t always obvious to homeowners until something goes wrong.

If an unqualified engineer works on an unvented hot water cylinder and it fails, your home insurance may not cover the resulting damage. If notifiable plumbing work is carried out without Building Regulations compliance, it can create serious problems when you sell the property. If water fittings work isn’t done to current Regulations standards, it can invalidate warranties on appliances and systems.

These aren’t edge cases. They come up regularly in London’s busy property market. Catalyst engineers are qualified across the key regulated areas, and we provide the documentation — G3 certification, completion notices, compliance records — that protects you as the property owner or occupier.

Full details of our credentials are on the Licences & Certifications page.

WHO WE WORK WITH

Homeowners — Our most common client. Whether it’s a weekend emergency or a planned renovation, we treat every residential job with the same level of care. Most of our homeowner clients come back to us, which is the benchmark we hold ourselves to.

Landlords and Letting Agents — The compliance requirements around rental properties have increased significantly in recent years. Gas safety, water safety, electrical certificates, EPC requirements — the documentation burden is real. We help landlords stay on top of maintenance and produce the records they need for their properties.

Property Managers and Managing Agents — Multi-site clients need a contractor who can handle volume, work to agreed service levels, and escalate only when necessary. We work with managing agents across London on everything from reactive repairs to full-building maintenance programmes.

Commercial Clients — Restaurants, offices, healthcare premises, gyms, retail. Commercial plumbing is different in its demands — systems under heavier load, work that often has to happen outside business hours, and financial consequences for downtime. We plan around that from the outset.

Developers and Self-Builders — First-fix and second-fix for new builds and major renovations. We work to programme, coordinate with other trades, and keep project managers informed at every stage. See our New Build Plumbing page for more detail.

WHY CHOOSE CATALYST

There are plenty of plumbers in London. The question worth asking isn’t “can I find a plumber?” but “can I find one I won’t have to call again about the same problem in three months?”

That’s the standard we work to. Our Reviews & Testimonials page gives a real picture of what our customers think — across different job types, different boroughs, different property types.

Our credentials speak to what we’re qualified to do. Visit Licences & Certifications for the full list.

And if you want to understand more about why we work the way we do, our Why Choose Us page goes into detail on the specifics.
